- Abstract
The spying service deployed by the Spanish Monarchy in the Ottoman Empire was one of the most interesting informational experiences in 16th century Europe. Briefly explained, this was a system for gathering news about the planning, preparation and execution of a military operation that could be used to act in sufficient time to counteract it. To this end, the spies produced a large body of documents that --given their conflict in the Mediterranean Sea-- described in particular various aspects of Turkish maritime reality. In this article, a corpus of these sources has been used to assess their potentiality in the study of the naval history of the Sublime Porte during this period. For this purpose, these documents have been analysed with the double aim of finding out which names, which spaces and which terms associated with this dimension were most frequently referenced and to examine what kind of information they could provide on this topic.
