- Abstract
The article discusses the history of education in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, focusing on the mid-nineteenth century. It examines the "dual system" of Australian elementary education that included both a Board of National Education and a Denominational School Board for various Christian schools. The author particularly comments on Presbyterian education in Maitland, New South Wales. He considers the relationship between church, state, and education and examines initiatives aimed at social, educational, and intellectual improvement. Other topics include home schooling and mechanics' institutes, or schools of arts.
