- Abstract
An essay is presented which discusses the history of the Cherry Grove Community House and Theatre on Fire Island, New York, which began attracting LGBT vacationers after a hurricane in 1938. The seasonal residents' group Property Owners Association (POA), the community theater's history, and discrimination against LGBT people in the 1950s are discussed, as well as beach resorts on Fire Island, the theater's listing on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and residents such as dramatist Noël Coward.
