- Title
'Profits sprout like tropical plants': a fresh look at what went wrong with the Eurasian spice trade c. 1550-1 800.
- Authors
Smith, Stefan Halikowski
- Abstract
The article discusses the decline of the spice trade in Eurasia. The author suggests that the trade was affected by Portuguese traders who engaged with spice supply sources and notes the importance of the re-export leg of the spice trade route through Lisbon, Portugal. He discusses attempts to export pepper substitutes such as malagueta to compete with the spice trade and how the proliferation of capsicum peppers in Europe affected the market for Piper nigrum. The marketing of peppers based on consumer demand is also discussed.
