- Abstract
The article presents a critique of the 19th-century novel "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," by Robert Louis Stevenson, focusing on its thematic engagement with the subject of addiction. The relationship between the lawyer Gabriel John Utterson and Dr. Jekyll is highlighted as a primary vehicle for embodying Victorian discourse of addiction. Historical context surrounding this issue is provided. Further reflections on the social class issues relating to addiction are included.
