The article discusses the ill effects of ionizing radiation which causes lethality due to severe damage to the hematopoietic system. It has been found that radiation toxicities can be reduced by infusion of the anticoagulants thrombomodulin or activated protein C. Cellular mechanisms that regulate the hematopoietic response are relevant to the same response that occurs after other myelosuppressive injuries such as chemotherapy.
