- Abstract
Since the 1990s depression among the African-U.S. (defined as the population of descendants of Africans who were enslaved in the United States) has been an increasing problem. Of the numerous scales that measure depression none have been identified as best or superior to use with this population. The purposes of this study are to explore three depression measures (a) for quick screening potential and (b) ability for predicting thinking about suicide with non-clinical African-U.S. college students. A small, convenience sample at a historically African- U. S. institution in Louisiana completed the measures. Results showed convergent validity and meaningful statistically reliable association with thinking about suicide. College mental health workers might make use of these instruments for quick screening of indication of depression and possible depression-related thinking about suicide.
