- Abstract
The article focuses on a new standards-based undergraduate technology education degree program which has been started at the Saint Petersburg College (SPC), Saint Petersburg, Florida. The SPC started its newest technology education bachelor of science degree program in the United States in the fall of 2004. From the beginning, the program was to be based on the Standards for Technological Literacy. The standards-based programs require rigorous content, professional development, curricula, instruction, assessment, and learning environments. During the development stage of the new SPC program, three main thrusts were worked on concurrently, which include, courses, facilities, and recruitment. In developing the teaching model for SPC, consideration was given to the varying types of model programs. Choices made about the number, balance, and sequencing of courses being prepared were influenced by the professional development and program standards in Advancing Excellence in Technological Literacy, program credit limits, and consultations with leaders from the Florida Technology Education Association, the International Technology Education Association, and the district technology education supervisors.
