- Title
Spectacle and Vulgarity: Stripper Dance at Temple Festivals in Contemporary Taiwan.
- Authors
Chiung-chi Chen
- Abstract
The article discusses the use of strip shows at religious festivals in Taiwan, its history and implications for local culture. It states that the practice began in the early 1980s when female strippers, who used to accompany Taiwanese pop bands, began appearing at temple festivals. It reports that they do so before families in electronic festooned vehicles (EFV) where images of gods were placed in procession. It claims they were originally needed to help pay for the cost of the EFVs by attracting crowds, and have become an acceptable part of the culture.
