Status Check: Science & Sustainability.
- Abstract
This article provides an overview of the current state of sustainability in clinical research. It highlights a roundtable discussion involving industry leaders who explored various topics, including the carbon footprint of research, the use of technology, reaching underrepresented populations, and the clinical supply chain. The challenges of improving sustainability in laboratories, which require energy-intensive equipment, are also discussed. The article emphasizes the trade-off between prioritizing research for rare diseases and addressing environmental impact, as well as the importance of patient participation and diversity in making trials more sustainable. It further explores the potential of technology, such as virtual visits and wearable devices, to reduce carbon emissions and the significance of incorporating underserved populations and historically black colleges and universities into clinical trials. The use of AI and machine learning to enhance efficiency and reduce physical monitoring is also mentioned. The article concludes by suggesting that the intersection of technology and healthcare will disrupt the industry in the future, leading to a more sustainable approach to trial design.
