- Abstract
The article focuses on Scottish sociologist, professor and urban planner Patrick Geddes's town planning activities in India. Geddes combined his civic advice and planning in India with lecture work, and around him gathered a band of enthusiastic pupils and admirers whether in Calcutta or Madras or Lucknow. In fact long before he settled himself in the chair of economics and sociology at the University of Bombay, his lectures on the history of the Universities at the Jagadish Chander Bose Laboratory in Calcutta attracted large and appreciative audiences. Whenever he toured or lectured, he could establish an intimate personal connection with College teachers and students. It has been thus that the Geddesian ideas slowly penetrated into some of the Indian universities. At least three of his most important contributions to sociology were written and published in India. But much more than his writings, his animated and suggestive conversations have influenced a good deal what India is thinking today in the field of the social sciences.
