- Title
Saints and Politics During the Kalmar Union Period.
- Authors
Sands, Tracey R.
- Abstract
The article discusses the way that saints and their images could be enlisted and deployed as expressions, but also as supporters, of political life and thought during the Kalmar Union period, from the late fourteenth century to approximately the 1520s in Nordic history. The author states that saints and their images can serve a symbolic function, as a reference to a person, cause, or idea not directly related to the saint's legend. The article analyzed the image of a saint in a suite of murals painted in 1437 in the Swedish parish church of Tensta.
