- Abstract
Metropolitan State College (MSC) in Denver, Colorado, attracts a commuter student body ranging from age 15 to 70 and reflecting the diversity of a large urban center. The typical student is 27.5 years old, self-supporting, and takes longer than four years to complete a baccalaureate degree. Fifty-two percent of all students are enrolled on a part-time basis. MSC offers supportive academic services to the student body through the developmental reading program, the academic advising center, the counseling center, and the tutoring and study skills center. Although MSC faculty are also committed to the needs of the less well-prepared students, many lower division courses suffer from high attrition rates while upper division courses often do not fill to capacity. The phenomena may be related to students' lack of reading ability or lack in study skills. Better coordination of study skills support with content areas may therefore be necessary. The Department of Biology has been dealing with the coordination problem for several years through paired study skills classes. The paired classes offer a specialized study skills credit class for freshmen biology students. Following a pilot study during summer session, 1976, a study was conducted during spring semester, 1977, by cooperating members of the Department of Biology, the Reading Department, and the Skills Reinforcement Center. In this study, the curriculum of a study skills course was coordinated with the curricula of two biology courses.
