- Abstract
The article focuses on the use of audiovisual materials in elementary school science. The use of objects, specimens, slides, film strips, and other types of instructional materials, in the open-circuit television broadcasts currently being used by many schools, lend a realism to instruction that would not be available through the use of the lecture technique alone. In education or training, the use of these materials stems from the early crude drawings sketched on a cave wall by prehistoric man. These days the teachers are not satisfied with textbook definitions of scientific principles, and cook-book experiments where the student is required to supply little knowledge and even less imagination to the process of carrying out pre-digested experimental procedures. Due to the influence of television, concepts that were thought to be of secondary school difficulty are now of interest to children in the elementary schools. The child's attention and interest is more towards television, motion pictures, comic books, and magazines, than towards the school.
