- Authors
Selzer, Linda F.
- Abstract
This essay discusses U.S. President Barack Obama, the 2008 U.S. presidential election, and African Americans and cosmopolitanism. Obama's notion of himself as cosmopolitan and as a citizen of the world, and the social meanings that were given to his body during the 2008 presidential campaign are considered. Examples of representations of Obama in the mass media include media coverage of his relationship with Reverend Jeremiah Wright, a photograph of Obama dressed in Somali clothing, and a cartoon that appeared in the July 21, 2008 issue of "The New Yorker" magazine. Other topics include democratic cosmopolitanism and Obama's statements about his race, ancestry, and body.
