The article focuses on Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), for preventing necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants. Topics discussed include necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is primarily a disease process of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of premature neonates that results in inflammation and bacterial invasion of the bowel wall; and Premature infants are typically deficient in DHA due to missing the in utero accumulation of DHA in the third trimester.
