- Abstract
Antimony (Sb), being a toxic metal element and non-essential to living organisms, has come into the soil in considerable quantities with anthropogenic production activities. The speciation of Sb is the main reason for determining its toxicity, so to make clear the factors that affect the speciation transformation of Sb in the soil is the theoretical basis for controlling soil Sb contamination. This paper elucidated the factors influencing the sorption fixation, chemical oxidation and reduction of Sb in soil systems and the underlying mechanisms, the main microorganisms involved in bio-sorption, oxidation, reduction and methylation, as well as the relevant acting genes and enzymes. In addition, principals and examples of applying Sb pollution obstruction technologies involving water management technology, organic fertilizers and inorganic passivants were presented. It is expected that this review could provide references for addressing the problem of soil Sb contamination and developing new obstruction technologies. Lastly, the research key-point in tackling soil Sb pollution were prospected.
