- Abstract
Background: The treasure of veterinary immunological products is the totality of vaccines, sera and in vivo diagnostics which are available in a certain country. These products have a pivotal role in control of epidemics. Objectives: This article focuses on the changes of the Hungarian immunological product treasure between 1993 and 2020. Materials and methods: The databases of veterinary medicinal products in three different time points (1993, 2002, 2020) were studied in order to answer the following questions: to what extent and by what means has the availability of veterinary immunological products change in Hungary in the last 27 years. Legal, social and epidemiological processes behind these changes were also analysed. Results and Discussion: The availability of veterinary immunological products are most significantly influenced by the legal background, the epidemiological situation, the demand from the market, the composition of the animal population and scientific development of vaccine production. In Hungary the privatization after systemic changes also had an effect on the market. While in 1993, 28.3% of the authorised vaccines were produced in Hungary, in 2002 and 2020 the figures were 11.9% and 11.7% respectively. The number of available products has doubled since 1993. Today 393 immunological products are authorised in Hungary for 18 different species. Appearance of new generation vaccines is one of the most important milestone in recent years. Immunological products, authorised in Hungary, together with the farm-specific vaccines and with the products with special licences are suitable to protect the animal population from infectious diseases.
