- Abstract
Introduction. Because smoking is a widespread addiction among people around the world, and the role of family doctors in counseling smokers and their families can be very important, we conducted a study to asses the level of knowledge of the "Stop Smoking" Programme and the sustainability of this programme by the family doctor. Aim. The purpose of this study is to increase the efficiency of smoking cessation counseling and to evaluate the means of support given to smokers who want to give up smoking. Materials and method. We conducted a study based on a questionnaire distributed during the monthly meeting of family doctors in Mureş county, on 19.11.2019, the meeting being attended by 84 doctors. Results. The answers received in the questionnaire showed that the majority of family doctors (80%) consider that there is not enough time during a regular consultation for the adequate counseling of smokers. For this reason, even though the family doctor can identify that the patient is a smoker, most family doctors do not have a strategy for counseling the smokers. At the same time, we found that the majority of doctors (67.86%) do not know or do not have enough information regarding the "Stop Smoking" Programme. Conclusions. The family doctor plays an important role in advising smokers, being the only specialist who follows the patient on a long-term basis. By financing smoking cessation programmes, counseling and pharmacological support can be provided immediately, but these programmes should also ensure the follow-up of the patient by the family doctor.
