- Abstract
Human pancreatic elastase 1, a glycoprotein with blood group antigenity (1) is distinguished by an extraordinary stability during intestinal passage (2). Its concentration in feces clearly reflects the exocrine capacity of the pancreas and thus serves as a suitable parameter for chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic insufficiency in cystic fibrosis. On the other hand, the concentration of elastase 1 in serum increases in the course of an acute pancreatitis. The determination of the exocrine capacity of the pancreas by measurement of Elastase 1 in stool is not influenced by substitution therapy.
