- Abstract
The literature shows that people living in urban areas are responsible for three-quarters of global carbon emissions. Developing low carbon cities is therefore crucial to mitigate these emissions. The focus of this study is on efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the urban region of Khon Kaen (120,000 inhabitants), located in northeast Thailand. In 2018, we conducted a qualitative study in four communities in Khon Kaen to gain insight into existing ways of reducing carbon emissions. The results showed that behavior linked to reducing carbon emissions was associated with recycling practices, waste management, and the upgrading of the quality of life, e.g., by developing more sustainable consumption patterns. We found that low carbon city initiatives must first deal with separating household waste and the correct disposal of organic waste, and that community networks are crucial for developing, capturing, and sharing best practices to develop waste management activities that meet the requirements for a transition toward a sustainable low carbon city environment.
