- Abstract
Introduction: Punica granatum is the object of study by multiple researchers because the species has chemical compounds in leaves, roots, barks, juice, and stem, being a source of tannins, saponins, polyphenols, flavonoids among many other substances. Aim: To describe the phytochemical profile and pharmacological activities of Punica granatum. Methodology: The study is a bibliographic review focusing on articles published in the last decade (2013-2012), using the Scopus, Embase, Web of Science and PubMed-Medline databases as primary sources of research and using the free Ryyan software for analysis of the relevant studies that integrate the final review. Results: The included studies describe pomegranate as a species rich in chemical compounds such as flavonoids, organic acids, and polyphenols. While pharmacological activities include anthelmintic, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticarcinogenic activity and actions against the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Conclusion: The diversity of compounds may represent a viable source to produce drugs and cosmetics with activities of biological functions relevant to human health.
