- Abstract
The article examines the political meanings of the performances of libelous songs against the Duke of Buckingham George Villiers by a group of nomadic fiddlers. The author presents various interpretations of the fiddlers' offense, which led to their prosecution by the Court of Star Chamber in the autumn of 1627. Also considered are the political dynamics of the later 1620s and the connection of the songs to early Stuart court scandal.
