- Abstract
Basque Civil Law Act 5/2015 of 25 June offers a new conception of Basque civil law in terms of its territorial and personal application, through its extension via the Basque civil community to all the inhabitants of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. A unique trait of this law is article 7 thereof, which sets out the bond between Basque civil law and co-official linguistic status, and it creates a space of its own for the use of the Basque language in deeds and contracts regulated by this law and in the public documentation that implements them. All this serves to fill some of the gaps to be found in the field of linguistic legislation currently in force in the Basque Country. To understand the effectiveness of this new article 7, we carried out a systematic study of its wording, and this provided conclusions that go beyond the purely Basque-Country territorial confines, tapping into the linguistic issue of the European Certificate of Succession, the new form of inheritance that opens up perspectives different to those known up to now both in the application of Basque civil law as well as in the use of the Basque language in its production and delivery.
