- Title
Allergic contact dermatitis from Rhus toxicodendron in a phytotherapeutic preparation.
- Abstract
Two patients developed vesicular eczema after application of phytotherapeutic ointments of European origin. In both preparations, the active ingredient was a Rhus toxicodendron extract. Because sensitization to plants of this genus is common in North America, a selected Canadian population to assess the risk of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) from these herbal remedies has been studied in the article. The oleoresin in these plants contains some potent allergens. Ointments containing Toxicodendron extracts are now used as rubefacients for minor museuloskeletal ailments.
