The article analyzes the use of magic realism, particularly the presence of vampires and cannibals, in the novel "Venous Hum" by Suzette Mayr as a strategy of literary contamination to criticize Canadian nationalism. It explores the connection of vampires and cannibals to racial anxieties and imbalances of power between Indigenous peoples and Euro-Canadians. Also discussed is the threat of multiculturalism and bilingualism to nationalism in Canada.
