- Abstract
The article focuses on the need of techniques and management practices to conserve essential nutrient elements especially nitrogen and improve crop efficiency. Nitrogen lost from soil through leaching and denitrification is not available for crop production. Since these losses occur mainly when nitrogen is applied in, or after conversion to, the nitrate form, various techniques such as multiple applications, late sidedressing, or increased rates of nitrogen are used to minimize nitrogen loss or its effects on crop growth. The recent availability of nitrification inhibitors to reduce these losses provides an additional approach to increase the efficient utilization of nitrogen in crop production.
