- Abstract
Mentoring is increasingly being implemented by higher education institutions as a strategy to address student retention and enhance the student experience. There is a wide variety of schemes and literature on the topic and much of the data provided is qualitative in nature. This paper will disseminate findings from a small pilot study of a student retention peer mentoring scheme. To evaluate, a mixed method approach was employed, the aim of which was to provide quantifiable evidence of any benefits. The mentoring scheme implemented demonstrated improved satisfaction in academic performance and increased confidence levels in the mentee's ability to obtain their degree. The findings from this pilot study have informed the mentoring provision included as part of the National Scholarship Programme at the University of Hertfordshire and also a peer coaching scheme with a focus on academic attainment. It will be of value to other higher education institutions that may be considering implementing a similar, mentoring scheme with similar aims and objectives, and suggests direction for possible further study.
