- Authors
Howie, Elizabeth
- Abstract
The article explores melancholy and power in the exhibition of wax figures by Madame Tussauds and of photographs of the wax subjects in "Portraits," by Hiroshi Sugimoto. The author notes that the appearance of the reality of the figures is enhanced by Sugimoto's portraits of the wax figures. She mentions that the wax figures at Madame Tussauds confront the visitor with his or her longing for celebrity and power. She cites that the wax museum allows visitors to experience illusory proximity to the celebrity which is impossible in reality.
