- Title
Interrogating Multiculturalism: Double Diaspora, Nation, and Re-Narration in Rohinton Mistry's Canadian Tales.
- Authors
Gabriel, Sharmani Patricia
- Abstract
Rohinton Mistry was born in Bombay in 1952 and migrated to Canada in 1975. As an immegrant writer, Mistry has used his different perspective to interrogate common assumptions about home and belonging in his Canadian narratives. Mistry's personal identity is further complicated by his Parsi identity. Even in India, the Parsi culture is a distinct minority. Mistry's "Tales from Firozsha Baag" emphasizes the instability of a national identity. The protagonist of several of the stories in "Tales from Firozsha Baag" is both distinctly Parsi and Anglicized. Even in the stories that have more of a basis in Canada, the displacement and lack of true multiculturalism is evident.
