- Abstract
This article reports on a failed HIV vaccine trial and its implications for vaccine research and HIV prevention. This HIV vaccine trial is the third large-scale trial that has failed, leading researchers to admit that there are few prospects for a vaccine and that studies should direct their efforts towards making new discoveries and emphasizing disease prevention. Male circumcision is discussed as an HIV prevention strategy. The use of antiretroviral drugs in HIV-infected postnatal nursing mothers as a prevention strategy is also described.
