- Abstract
The article presents an editorial looking at the assessments of mental health needs after disasters such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The article refers to the studies "Mental health problems among adults in tsunami-affected areas in southern Thailand" by F. van Griensven and colleagues and "Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression among children in tsunami-affected areas of southern Thailand," by W. Thienkrua and colleagues published in this issue. The article discusses the importance of economic and social reconstruction on survivors' mental health and the wide range of psychological reactions to traumatic events.
