- Authors
Hyde, Jenni
- Abstract
This article discusses two books that contribute to the study of ballads in early modern England and Europe. Patricia Fumerton's book focuses on the intermediality of early modern ballads and explores their multifaceted nature. Una McIlvenna's book examines execution ballads across five languages and 400 years, highlighting the emotional effects of these songs on both the singer and the listener. Both books emphasize the importance of understanding ballads as a form of performance and explore the connections between music, words, and emotions. The article acknowledges that not all readers may agree with the authors' findings, but praises their depth of knowledge and theoretical approaches.
