- Title
Providence and technology in the English Civil War: Edmond Felton and his engine.
- Authors
Raylor, Timothy
- Abstract
The article focuses on an engine of war designed by Edmond Felton. It was built for use by the Parliamentary army. The conception and promotion of Felton's engine is of interest not only as an episode in the history of the Civil War, but because it affords an insight into contemporary puritan attitudes towards technology and warfare. The Feltons were a fascinating dynasty, a study of which sheds new light upon the assassination of Buckingham. Felton's interest in military technology was given added urgency by the Irish rebellion of 1641, which impressed upon him the possibility of exterminating popery through military rather than economic stratagems.
