- Abstract
Objective: This study is intended to evaluate the efficacy of ultrasonografhy as a complemental diagnosis method in cases with clinical suspicion of acute appendicitis. Materials and methods: Retrospective study of 70 cases from January 2010 to July 2011 with clinical suspicion of appendicitis, which were evaluated by ultrasonography, underwent appendectomy and subsequent pathologycal examination of the surgical material. Results: From the 70 ultrasound examinations performed, in 4 cases (5.7%) the result was truenegative, 2 cases (2.8%) false-positive and in 64 patients (91.5%) confirmed acute appendicitis in the pathologycal examination. Of those, ultrasonografhy was positive in 56 (87.5%). In 39 patients (61.0%) the inflamed appendix and secondary inflammatory findings were visualized by the ultrasonography. In 17 patients (26.5%) there was no direct visualization of the appendix, however were identified the indirect signs that indicated surgery. There were 8 cases (12.5%) with the result of false-negative. The sensibility verifitated was 87,5% and the specificity was 66,6%. The positive and negative predictive values were 96,5% and 33;3%, respectively. The accuracy was 73,7%. Conclusion: Ultrasonography is a valuable tool in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis because it minimizes the morbidity of the disease in both cases when direct visualization of the appendix occurs, or when only indirect signs were seen on the examination.
