- Abstract
Marissa A. Mika's book, "Africanizing Oncology: Creativity, Crisis, and Cancer in Uganda," provides a comprehensive history of the Uganda Center Institute (UCI) and its role in Africanizing oncology in Uganda. Mika highlights the resourcefulness of Ugandans in providing cancer care despite challenges such as material constraints, political instability, and social issues. The book draws on historical and anthropological sources, including UCI archival sources, ethnographic fieldwork, oral histories, and interviews. It offers a geographical context from the eastern part of Africa and contributes to Ugandan history and African studies. The book is recommended for anthropology, African history, and African studies classes, as well as courses focusing on African health and disease.
