- Abstract
The article's goal is to determine the genres and types of musical compositions of the Dzukai folk iddlers' repertoire, to reveal the peculiarities of the whole region of Dzukija and its separate parts as well as to deine the tendencies of the changes. The research methods used are analysis and typological comparison. The Dzukian iddlers have preserved many old traditional dances, marches and ritual songs, laments and hymns. The repertoire characteristic of the iddlers of the region and its separate parts has been determined: dances (sukcius, tancius, kepurele, Tai vikiai, tai grikiai, serbinta, skepetine), marches, wedding and Easter songs. In the northern and southern part of the area attributed to Dzukija the iddlers' repertoire has much in common; however, marked diferences also exist which makes it possible to speak of separate ethnographic regions (Eastern Aukštaitija and Dzukija) as well as musical dialects. The links between the old music for iddle of Eastern Lithuania and Western Belarus (ritual songs, laments, old dances) testify to the existence of old common tradition. A later repertoire over diferent historical periods shows the mutual links between Lithuanian and Belarusian instrumental music. The Dzukai, Belarusians and Poles have been neighbours for many centuries which determined stronger links with Slavic culture of instrumental music there than anywhere else in Lithuania. On the other hand, dances that came from various western and northern European nations were widely spread over in Dzukija, which is the eastern border of the area where the angelcikas (anglaise), pranavada (francaise) and the jig are spread. During the last decades, folk iddlers have played almost only the polka; however, the number of waltzes and songs written by performers is increasing.
