Popularizing haute couture: acceptance and resistance to the New Look in the post-1945 United States.
- Authors
Kuźma, Sylwia
- Abstract
An essay is presented on the role of haute couture in the process of redefining the national identity of the U.S. during and after the Cold War. The author shows how haute couture reflected both a critique of old world values and affirmation of American virtues like thrift, egalitarianism, and individualism, virtues that would become key elements in America's self definition in opposition to the Soviet Union. The concept of haute couture is also discussed.
