- Abstract
In this investigation, the degree to which differences were present in the reading achievement of Grade 5 and 6 students who were economically disadvantaged in schools with multiple grade levels versus single grade levels for the 2011 academic year was examined. Utilizing archival data from the Texas Education Agency on over 3,000 Texas public schools, statistically significant differences, with small effect sizes, were yielded in reading achievement between schools with multiple grade levels versus schools with single/dual grade levels. Students who were economically disadvantaged and who were enrolled in schools with a larger grade span outperformed students who were economically disadvantaged and who were enrolled in schools with single/dual grade levels. As such, more evidence is present regarding the effects of school transitions on student learning. Challenges experienced by students who are economically disadvantaged and implications for policy makers are discussed.
