- Abstract
Objective: To document an unreported anomaly of the liver which assist clinicians, radiologists and surgeons by knowing the presence of an aberrant tissue on left side of the liver which could be considered as "left sided Riedel's lobe". Material and Methods: The liver of a 47 year old embalmed female cadaver during educational gross anatomy dissection in the Department of Anatomy, AIIMS. Results: We found that the liver was having a Riedel's lobe (RL) and few other anomalies like an aberrant projection of liver tissue (1.5" long and 1" broad) from the inferior border of the left lobe. It was flattened, roughly semicircular in shape. Several accessory sulci (AS) and fissures (AF) were also observed on the liver surface, which could be congenital defects or due to pressure from surrounding viscera. No other anomaly was observed. Conclusion: This aberrant liver tissue did not fit any previous description of a liver lobe. Since, the liver already had a Riedel's lobe as per textbook description; this aberrant tissue could be a "left-sided" Riedel's lobe. Riedel's lobe is important in clinical practice as it produces a right-sided abdominal mass or can undergo torsion and ischemic necrosis.
