- Abstract
Objective: To study arteriolosclerosis, ophthalmoscopic fundus arteriolae were measured to compare with stiffness and patency of aorta, femoral artery and tibial artery. Design: Statistical distribution (kurtosis) of image brightness and spatial resolution (the two-dimensional Fourier transform) were measured for the images of the fundus arteriolae, the cardio-ankle vascular index was measured for the stiffness of aorta and artery of the extremity, and the ankle brachial index was measured for the vessel patency of aorta, femoral artery and tibial artery. Materials and Methods: One hundred and seventy six volunteers, aged 35 to 91 years, participated in this study, after informed consent. Brightness distribution (Kurtosis) and stain or spatial resolution were measured for the fundus images. The cardio-ankle vascular index was measured for the stiffness of aorta, femoral artery and tibial artery. The ankle brachial index was measured for the patency of the vessels. Results: The mean kurtosis was -0.27 + 1.16 (standard deviation) for the red brightness, -0.49 ± 0.74 for the green brightness, and -0.13 ± 0.49 for the blue brightness, respectively. Significant differences were noted between the kurtosis of the red and that of the green brightness, and between the kurtosis of the green and that of the blue brightness. The mean slope was -0.02 + 0.03 for the red brightness, -0.12 ± 0.07 for the green brightness, and -0.24 ± 0.06 for the blue brightness, respectively. Significant differences were noted between them. The regression analysis showed the predictive equations for CAVI; [Y = 0.091 x X - 1.056] and 0.089 (correlation coefficient) for the red kurtosis; [Y = 0.175 x X - 2.00] and 0.281 for the green kurtosis; [Y = 0.079 x X - 0.812] and 0.192 for the blue kurtosis; [Y = 0.001 x X - 0.033] and 0.045 (correlation coefficient) for the red slope; [Y = 0.017 X X - 0.270] and 0.280 for the green slope; [Y = 0.009 X X - 0.318] and 0.164 for the blue slope, respectively. The regression analysis showed the predictive equations for ABI; [Y = -0.942 X X + 0.750] and -0.077 (correlation coefficient) for the red kurtosis; [Y = - 1.385 X X + 1.003] and -0.184 for the green kurtosis; [Y = -0.646 X X + 0.567] and -0.130 for the blue kurtosis, ; [Y = -0.058 X X + 0.043] and -0.164 (correlation coefficient) for the red slope; [Y = -0.145 x X + 0.033] and -0.195 for the green slope; [Y = -0.016 X X - 0.223] and 0.000 for the blue slope, respectively. Conclusion: The kurtosis and the slope of fundus arteriolae might evaluate vessel stiffness and patency.
