- Title
What's in a Song? Copyright's Unfair Treatment of Record Producers and Side Musicians.
- Authors
Fleet, Gabriel Jacob
- Abstract
The article offers information on the Copyright Act that protects original works of authorship set in any tangible medium of expression. The Act particularly protects two discrete copyrights evident in the recorded version of a musical composition. Furthermore, the Copyright Act involves musical works which includes any accompanying words as copyrightable subject matter. Some courts stick to the simplistic belief that a musical composition is simply melody and lyrics. Moreover, other courts take a broader perspective which includes rhythm and harmony in addition to melody and lyrics.
