- Authors
Nobbs-Thiessen, Ben
- Abstract
The article examines the existence of Mennonite colonies outside of their typical locations in Western Europe and North America, specifically focusing upon Mennonites in Latin America. The author references works by sociologist Joseph Winfield Fretz, wherein he examines Mennonite communities in Mexico and Paraguay. The elements of diaspora that led these Mennonites to relocate to Latin American colonies and live in relative seclusion from other Mennonites are discussed. Fretz’s academic and social histories are provided to illustrate his interest in these remote communities. Numerous excerpts are presented from his writings, such as “Mennonite Colonization in Mexico" and "Pilgrims in Paraguay."
