The article presents a comparative analysis of the Mennonite experience of wealth and poverty in the Dutch Republic from the 16th to the 18th century. The article also discusses this experience in the Russian Empire in the 19th and early 20th century. The author talks about Biblical injunctions and how the Bible, despite variations in interpretations, has helped formulate Mennonite ideas, attitudes, and practices. The poverty of the Mennonites brought on by persecution, war, famine, and disease is detailed. The article talks about the economic prosperity of some Mennonites in areas where their faith was tolerated. The article also discusses the development of personal philanthropy.
