- Abstract
The article highlights the execution of David Creigh on June 11, 1864 and the implementation of Union war policies in the new state of West Virginia and how a southern Appalachian community on the border of the Confederacy responded to them. It informs that in November 1863, David Creigh killed a Union soldier who robbed his home in Lewisburg, West Virginia and seven months later, in June 1864, federal officials convicted Creigh of murder and sentenced him to be executed.
