- Authors
Gaderer, Rupert
- Abstract
The article discusses the works of German writer E. T. A. Hoffmann with reference to his literary concept of love against a backdrop of 18th century ideas about electrical phenomena in natural science. The author relates the development of electrical devices, theories, and knowledge during that period to aesthetic literary notions and an anthropological concept of animal magnetism. Hoffmann's work is said to entwine technology with poesy in his idea of an "electrical love concept." Selections from his works are cited as examples of viewing the human body as an erotic sort of electrical relay system or "homo electrificatus."
