- Abstract
This paper deals with the variety of factors that explain the acceptance, popularity and success of economic theories, using Keynes’ work and biographies as illustrative examples. Because of Keynes’ fame and renown, and because of the huge amount of secondary and tertiary literature on Keynes, it is ideally suited for this purpose, as well as for discussing further issues related to the interpretation of biographies. There are enormous differences between interpretations of the same biographical facts. These are interesting and important because they show the potentials for manipulation through biography. Moreover, the differences between the biographies written by professional economists and those of historians and journalists are also well reflected. The conclusion of the study is that, in addition to their logical content, consistency, novelty and their ability to adequately explain real economic phenomena, other reasons outside of the economic theories themselves play a role in their appraisal and acceptance.
