Mortgaging Canada: George Reid's Mortgaging the Homestead and the 1891 Federal Election.
- Authors
Hill, Charles C.
- Abstract
The article analyzes George Reid's 1890 oil painting "Mortgaging the Homestead" in the light of the federal elections in 1891. Topics mentioned include a summary of Reid's artistic career and social concerns, how the painting was originally received, and the role "Mortgaging" played in the elections. The issue of tariffs on agricultural exports to the United States, and Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald's negotiations with the Americans, proved to be a dominant one and the Liberals used Reid's painting in their campaigns. Colour reproductions of the painting in question, as well as several works after it, are included in the article.
