- Title
Integrating Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) into Academic Content: A Path for Education Preparation Programs.
- Authors
Taylor, Alexandra J.; Lein, Amy E.
- Abstract
Classroom management is an ongoing struggle that can interfere with teaching and learning. It is also an area that is lacking in many education preparation programs (EPPs). When students are taught social and emotional skills embedded in their academic content, they become more successful and as a result, teachers gain more control over the management of their classrooms. Using the techniques presented in this manuscript, both pre-service and practicing teachers can learn how to integrate social and emotional learning (SEL) and academic content. As a result, teachers will have opportunities to practice explicit integration in their lesson planning which overtime will translate into more manageable classrooms. Specific processes for developing lessons plans are addressed within the paper including content knowledge, learning target(s)/objective(s), student characteristics, learning environment, lesson procedures, and reflection on teaching and learning. Faculty in EPPs can gain insight surrounding the importance of SEL and academic content integration and as a result, become more knowledgeable on how to teach integration of SEL and academic content in the teacher education curriculum. Additionally, lesson plan templates and grading rubrics are provided for use within EPPs.
