- Abstract
Objective: To determine the factors that influence the functional independence of basic and instrumental activities in the elderly during home confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology: Case-control study, in a geriatric population from 60 to 84 years old without a diagnosis of COVID-19 in home confinement due to a pandemic. Case, patient who maintained the independence of basic and instrumented activities, control, patient who changed from independent to dependent in basic and instrumented activities. The Barthel index and the Lawton and Brody scale were used. Risk factors included age, family nucleus, polypathology, and physical activity. Chi-square, odds ratio, multiple logistic regression, and probability of occurrence of the event were calculated. Results: Risk factors for maintaining independence in basic activities include physical activity, OR of 8.88 (95%CI: 4.69-16.79); not having multiple pathologies, OR of 5.35 (95%CI: 2.77-10.34); young adult, OR of 4.50 (95%CI: 2.46-8.20); and living with the wife and children, OR of 3.18 (95%CI: 1.69-5.99). The regression equation to explain the functional independence in the instrumented activities is statistically significant (χ² = =73.03; p = 0.000). y = -1.935 + 0.038 (age) + 0.792 (living together) + 1.075 (no polypathology) + 1.734 (physical activity). Conclusion: Factors that influence the maintaining functionality in the elderly were identified, highlighting among all of them physical activity as the most important.
